What is RSS?

***UPDATE*** April 26, 2007- Ian at Brave New Traveler shares a great video on RSS that he found at CommonCraft. Watch the video to find out how you can subscribe to Rambling Traveler. It explains RSS even better than I did below.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. There are all kinds of sites that explain how it works, but I'll try to sum it up with my non-technical understanding. Basically, many of the websites you read that are updated frequently have RSS feeds. You can subscribe to these feeds, and get the updates on a feed reader that you choose.

I use Google Reader, but there are many others, including Yahoo and Bloglines. When a new article is posted on a site that you follow, it shows up on your reader. You can read the post right there, or you can follow the link to the actual site and read it there. It's great, because you don't have to go to each site individually to look for new content, the reader tells you when it's there.

Many sites have orange subscription buttons that you can press to subscribe to that feed. Your reader can tell you other ways you can subscribe to a site. For more information, Ezine Articles has a good explanation of RSS newsfeeds.

Hopefully this will help you understand what that orange button is on my sidebar. If you like Rambling Traveler, you can subscribe to the posts and comments. Whenever I post a new article, or someone leaves a comment, you'll know about it.

Site Tip- Searching the Blog

If you are interested in a particular subject, you can search RamblingTraveler in different ways.

Labels: When I write a post, I will label it with categories that describe what the post is about. There is a section marked "Labels" in the sidebar that shows these categories . If you have an interest in a specific subject, you can click on that label, and it will bring you to those posts.

Archive: You can also check out the "Blog Archive" section of the sidebar to find posts that might interest you. Just click on the title that you want to read, and that post will open.

Search Box: At the top of RamblingTraveler is a navigation bar with a search box. Just type in the subject you want to read about, and click on "search blog". This will bring you to the posts that relate to your subject.

Any one of these options should get you to where you want to be on the site. If not, please let me know what you are looking for, and I'll help you in anyway I can.

Site Tip- Books and Links

In the sidebar on the right side of RamblingTraveler, I have a section marked "Books I Like" where I list books that I mention in my posts. If you click on the title of the book, the link will take you to Amazon where you can read more about the book. If you are interested, you can also buy it. *

A note about link behavior: If you click on any link on RamblingTraveler, you will leave this site and go to the new site that you clicked on. If you prefer to open the site in a new window, or tab:
For Internet Explorer 6: press the shift key while you click on the link.
For Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox: press the ctrl key while you click on the link.

* In the spirit of open disclosure, I will mention that I am a part of Amazon Affiliates, and if you purchase a book after following the link from my site, I will receive a percentage of the sale from Amazon.

I hope this information was useful for you, if you have any questions, please let me know.
