Friday Photo Post: Greek Ruins on Delos

house of dionysos, delos, greeceThe House of Dionysus (so named because of the above mosaic) has a fun story attached to it. According to our tour guide, while they were excavating the ruins, in a room thought to be the nursery, they found children's handwriting on a section of plaster low on the wall. It said, "Hercules, Hermes stole your marbles." The plaster with the writing was carefully removed and can be viewed in the museum on Delos. Later on, Doug and I wandered through the museum, but we missed the plaster section. I also didn't find any mention of it in our book on the ruins of Delos, so I don't know if the story is true or not, but it is fun to imagine.

This is another house on the island. I also have more pictures of the ruins on Delos.

Friday Photo Post: Santorini, Greece

Santorini, GreeceIt is spring break, and I am in Minnesota. Today we are expecting a daytime high temperature of 28°F, well below normal. The sun is shining, and it looks beautiful outside, but it is cold and windy. To cheer myself up and remember warmer times, I decided to post some pictures from our visit to Santorini, Greece last summer.

Santorini, GreeceI am also making a resolution to plan a trip to somewhere warm during next year's spring break. Of course, that is when Minnesota will play another trick and have unseasonably warm weather.

Delos, GreeceToday's pictures come to you from the Greek Island of Delos, the birthplace of the gods Artemis and Apollo. According to our tour guide, the inscription on the statues pictured above explains that the couple had the statues made to commemorate their gift of two silver tridents and many silver coins to the Temple of Apollo. A bit of self promotion, I think.

Santorini, Greece

oia, santorini, greeceSantorini was an active volcano that erupted c.1620 BC, causing the center of the island to explode and sink into the ocean. Several towns are built into the cliffs that form the rim of the caldera, including Oia, whose whitewashed cliff homes are often photographed.

During our cruise, we stopped in Santorini and visited Oia and Fira. Both are fun towns to walk around, but Fira was my favorite for shopping. Narrow lanes lined with shops wind around the town.

We also visited a winery. The island gets very little precipitation, so the grapevines are grown in small basket-like shapes close to the ground where they can take advantage of the morning dew. This also helps protect the vines from strong winds.

Another product of Santorini is pistachio nuts. We saw many pistachio trees on the island, and you can buy bags of the nuts from vendors.

To get back to the pier from Fira, you can take the cable car, walk down 586 steps or ride a mule down those same steps. Since you share the steps with the mules, you can imagine it wouldn’t be the most pleasant smelling walk. We took the cable car.
