Thank you to Dave at GoPacking for tagging me on this one. This was a good opportunity for me to do some serious thinking about why I started Rambling Traveler and what I hope to accomplish with it. So, taking a deep breath, I am ready to share my 5 reasons.
1. It is a great way for me to share my travel experiences and encourage others to get out and explore different destinations.
Okay, I totally copied Dave on this one, but it is so true. I love to travel, and I want to tell people about the places I've been to. I also want to inspire people to get out and see this incredible world we live in.
2. It puts my hours of travel research to good use.
Anyone who knows me will agree that I spend a lot of time reading- books, magazines, websites, travel brochures, etc. My blog gives me a chance to share what I've learned with others, and a good excuse to keep reading.
3. Community
I have met so many incredible people online. People with amazing stories, great tips, and kind words of encouragement. When I see the quality of what's out there, I sometimes wonder who I'm kidding by trying to join in, but I'm learning so much that I can't leave.
4. Something to do
I have three children in school, but I didn't want to go back to work full time. My blog gives me something fun and interesting to do, but allows me to still be there when they need me. No worries about taking time off for a sick child, helping at school, taking care of household appointments, or traveling.
5. A chance to write
Again, I'm copying Dave on this one. I enjoy writing. I've kept a journal for over 15 years, and this is another way for me to record some of my experiences. I'm also hoping it will help improve my writing skills now that I'm writing for an audience.
Now it's my turn to throw down the gauntlet. I'd really like to hear from:

This stuff is great to read.
I've wanted to start a blog of some sort for a while, but couldn't think of what. Then I thought, hey, I'll start a travel blog. And I went online and looked around a little. I found very little and decided that it was a perfect niche for me to start. A week after starting it was pretty clear to me that this whole travesphere is pretty darn huge. I still love it.
I'll post on this tomorrow.
Thanks.
Take care,
Timen
I know exactly what you mean. I also had a hard time finding travel blogs until I started my own. It didn't take long to find a lot more.
It's become apparent to me as well that outside of travel-specific communities that support blogs - such as BootsnAll.com and Travelpod.com - blogs focused on travel advice and experience (which aren't overly corporate) are few and far between.
I think that's why Timen's idea for a trusted travel blog network is so great, it can help to build that sense of community amongst those of us who are blogging independent of the established travel communities.
Dave
I'm also looking forward to having a listing of good blogs in one place. It will be an incredible resource for information on travel, and a great way to build a community for those who are interested.
Stacy, i am Sridhar Varma from Delhi,IND.I liked your blog & the contents.

Stacy
I said I'd post about it today, but I've had a pretty full day. I'll be leaving it till tomorrow...
Hi Stacy,
I've been off the net for a couple of days now... so haven't had time to write anything yet.
I've started many blogs in the past but gave them all up. This time around I have much more focus. I blogged about my travels in Asia mainly for friends and family... for a kind record of my trip....I enjoyed writing about my frustrations and found they were my best entries... from here sprang TravMonkey.com.
I'll post about it in detail very soon....not sure who to challenge to write about it next though, I'm new here, remember!
Thanks again,
The Monkey
TravMonkey, I look forward to reading your post. It's been interesting to read the similarities and differences in the reasons people write about.
Timen, I noticed you posted your reasons today, I'm on my way over to read them!
hi stacy, thanks for the challenge. i should be able to write it up early next week...though i warn i may decide to take a slightly different angle on the answers.... ;-)
Hi Ian! Very intriguing...you've piqued my curiosity and I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
I enjoyed getting to know why you blog! I only learned about the blogging world 9 months ago and it has enriched my life so immeasurably. I wonder what I did before!
Hi Maryam, thank you for visiting Rambling Traveler. It is amazing the world that opens up for you once you discover blogs. I've started reading the archives to your blog- what an incredible story!
